Norcross Schools Score Big in Hilton Invitational

The boys basketball teams for Greater Atlanta Christian School and Norcross High played and won in their games Saturday.

Two Norcross-area boys basketball teams, Greater Atlanta Christian School and Norcross High, came out on top in last Saturday's Hilton Invitational, a series of games involving 12 teams from local Georgia schools and numerous states. It was a close game for Norcross High School, who also hosted the fifth-annual event. The Blue Devils defeated Dematha High, from Maryland, with an end score of 68-67, according to HoopSeen.com. Calling it the "best game of the Hilton Invitational," the website gave special notice to senior Brandon Goodwin, who finished with not only 21 points but also the game's winning goal with seven seconds left. Norcross Running Back Makes 2012 All-American Football Team

Alvin Kamara, the all-star running back for the Blue Devils, earned the honor of being on the second team offense.

Alvin Kamara, the all-star running back for Norcross High, was named to the second team offense on the MaxPreps 2012 All-American Football Team. "In leading the nation's No. 3 team, Kamara earned Class AAAAAA Player of the Year honors, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution," says the story by MaxPreps' Stephen Spiewak. Norcross Running Back Named AJC All-Class Player of the Year

Alvin Kamara has led his Norcross High football team on to victory this season.

Norcross High running back Alvin Kamara has been named The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s all-classification player of the year. GAC, Norcross Players Picked for GSWA All-State Football Team

The 2012 Georgia Sportwriters Association All-State Football Team included players from Norcross High and Greater Atlanta Christian.

The 2012 Georgia Sportswriters Association All-State Football Teams were released this week, and a few football gems from the Norcross area made it in. According to the Gwinnett Daily Post citing the Associated Press, players from both Norcross High and Greater Atlanta Christian were on the teams for their respective classes. The Class AAAAAA team had six players from the Blue Devils, and the Spartans had four football players in Class AA. Norcross head coach Keith Maloof was named the Coach of the Year and running back Alvin Kamara received the Offensive Player of the Year title. Read the full article on Norcross Patch. High 5 Sports Team of the Year Award Goes to Norcross High

The Blue Devils accepted the award in a ceremony Wednesday at the school.

The Norcross High School football team has been named the High 5 Sports Team of the Year for 2012. Hundreds attended and cheered at the ceremony Wednesday in the school's cafeteria. The award was presented by Gil Tyree of Fox 5 Atlanta's High 5 Sports. "It's awesome for the kids and the community," head football coach Keith Maloof told Patch. "They deserve it, and they did what they needed to do. I'm very proud of the community because they've done so much for us." Norcross Wins Class AAAAAA Football Title

The Blue Devils defeated Lovejoy High 21-14 in the state championship game.

After an undefeated 14-win season, the Blue Devils added one more win Saturday at the Georgia Dome. Norcross High defeated Lovejoy High 21-14 in the state football championship,  earning the Class AAAAAA title for the first time. The game had a slow start with nothing on the board until Lovejoy scored a 60-yard touchdown in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead. Norcross kicked a field goal in the third quarter, but the Wildcats answered with another touchdown minutes later, taking a 14-3 lead. Norcross' winning points came in the fourth quarter with Alvin Kamara's 61-yard touchdown reception, which was followed by another touchdown by the running back. NHS Football Gift Drive to Help Nonprofit, Players in Need

The Blue Devils team is asking for new toys, grocery gift cards and food baskets at the semifinals game to help not only a local nonprofit, but also Norcross players in need.

For the second year, the Norcross High football team is running a food and toy drive to benefit a Norcross community organization and its players in need. "We wanted to do something to help out in the community and get our team involved so they would feel more ownership and have a sense of investment within their community," said Chris Hall, the ninth grade football coach. "So we brainstormed and came up with a toy drive after last season." Toy donations went to the A. Worley Brown Boys & Girls Club in Norcross last December, but the team wanted to do more.
