Berkmar's title in Class AAAAAA boys soccer is Lilburn school's first championship outside of basketball.
Gwinnett County came away with two state championships Saturday in the Georgia High School Association finals. See also: The biggest win was in Class AAAAAA boys, where Berkmar High upset defending large-school champ Collins Hill, 2-0 at Kennesaw State. It was third sports championship in school history. Berkmar has won two previous state championships in boys basketball. Parkview beat Harrison 2-1 in the AAAAAA girls final, also at Kennesaw State, to win its eighth state title in the sport. The Panthers won 18 of their final 19 games en route to the championship. Gwinnett teams came up short in two other finals Saturday. Parkview ended its 2013 spring football practice with its annual Orange-White intrasquad game.
The 2013 football season unofficially opened Friday with the annual Orange-White intrasquad game, signalling the end of spring football. The game, played at Parkview's Big Orange Jungle stadium in Lilburn, ended in a 6-6 tie.

Both teams needed to win PK shootouts to advance in the Georgia High School Association tournament.
It will be an all-Gwinnett County showdown for the Class AAAAAA boys soccer championship. But it first took some extended play Wednesday night in the semifinals. Collins Hill and Berkmar both needed penalty kicks to advance in the Georgia High School Association tournament. Also see: Collins Hill, the defending large-school champ, beat Harrison in a match played in Suwanee. The Eagles outshot Harrison 3-2 in penalty kicks after the game was tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime. Berkmar made all seven of its PKs to beat East Coweta in Lilburn, out-shooting the visitors 7-6. The game was tied 2-2 after regulation and OT. Parkview's girls soccer and baseball teams advance in playoffs
It was a big night for sports Tuesday in Lilburn. Parkview High School won its home matchups in both baseball and girls soccer to advance in the Georgia High School Association playoffs. See also: The baseball team swept Colquitt County 16-11 and 7-3 to reach the Class AAAAAA semifinals. The girls soccer team beat South Forsyth 2-1 to reach this weekend's Class AAAAAA championship game. Parkview will host Milton next week in the baseball semifinals, and face Harrison Saturday in the girls soccer final, to be played at Kennesaw State. In 2010, the National Collegiate Athletic Association deemed the junior offensive lineman ineligible for play because he tested positive for steroids.
By now, University of Georgia football fans know that the NCAA banned Kolton Houston from play as a freshman. An anabolic steroid injection while attending Buford High School has kept the junior offensive lineman riding the bench. -- Is this ban fair? Should it be lifted? Let is know in the comment section. -- Houston and his parents have said the steroids were used against his knowledge to speed healing of a shoulder injury, and that treatment is still lingering in his system. A couple of years later, he and his university are still fighting the decision. In a recent interview with ESPN, Houston discusses his predicament. Wins on Tuesday night could match neighboring rivals for the state high school championship in girls soccer.
Gwinnett high-school sports fans might think of football first when it comes to Brookwood vs. Parkview. But the county's fiercest rivalry often spills into other sports, sometimes all the way to the state finals. Brookwood and Parkview have faced each other for state championships in baseball (2012, won by Parkview, football (2002, won by Parkview), boys soccer (2001, they tied) and girls soccer (2003, also a tie). It could happen again this week. The schools are one win away from meeting each other for the Class AAAAAA girls soccer championship this weekend. The Gwinnett Braves will hold a 5k and "Tripp Halstead Night" to raise money for the toddler injured in Barrow County last year.
The Gwinnett Braves announced Monday they will hold a 5k to raise funds for Tripp Halstead, the Barrow County toddler injured when a tree limb hit him in the head during Hurricane Sandy last fall. The race called "Tripp's Trot" will take place Saturday, June 22nd at 8am at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Ga. Registration is $25 before May 22nd and increases to $35 the day of the event. There will also be a Fun Run. Registration for that is $20. Runners can register at trippstrot.com. The support will continue later that day with "Tripp Halstead Night" at the G-Braves game against the Syracuse Chiefs. Five of six county teams won Friday to advance to the semifinals.
Gwinnett County rocked the Georgia High School Association girls soccer tournament Friday night. Five of the six Gwinnett schools playing in various quarterfinal games won, including fierce rivals Parkview and Brookwood in Class AAAAAA, and Greater Atlanta Christian and Wesleyan in Class AA.
