Football Fever: Pigskin Pep Rally, 'Lombardi', High School Openers

Are you ready for some football? There's something going on for you this weekend — from Vince Lombardi, to bluechip high-schoolers, to Touchdown Bingo.

Here’s some of what’s scheduled, according to local websites, and Explore Gwinnett (Gwinnett Visitor's and Convention Bureau):

For Openers
Some of the state's best high school teams reside in Gwinnett County, and many of them are opening their regular seasons this weekend.

Five games are featured at the Georgia Dome for the Corky Kell Classic (tickets, $15) Saturday, Aug. 24, including these four involving Gwinnett teams: Peachtree Ridge vs. Walton, 11:45 a.m.; Grayson vs. Colquitt County, 2:30 p.m.; North Gwinnett vs. Camden County, 5:30 p.m.; Brookwood vs. McEachern, 8:30 p.m.

ESPN is broadcasting two big games Saturday at Norcross High School. The highlight is the 7 p.m. matchup between defending state champ and No. 1-ranked Norcross against Booker T. Washington, the No. 1 team in the nation, according to USA Today. South Gwinnett plays Lincoln, Fla., at 3:30 p.m.

Frozen Tundra

The Tony Award-winning play "Lombardi" (tickets $8; info 678-717-3624) — chronicling the life of legendary Green Bay Packers football coach Vince Lombardi — runs through the weekend at the Buford Community Center. It's the first show of the Gainesville Theatre Alliance/Southern Stage's second season at the facility. Showtimes: 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21-25; 2:30 p.m. Aug. 25.

Touchdown Bingo!

Bethesda Park Senior Center near Lawrenceville hosts Pigskin Pep Rally at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 ($6, register by Aug. 22). Wear your team colors and play football-themed games — including Touchdown Bingo. Info: 678-277-0179.
