School Officials Begin Rules to Better Protect Students Suffering Concussions

Officially, Georgia's "Return to Play Act" begins in January 2014.

New rules relating to concussion dangers for Georgia high school athletes goes into effect in January, but some schools are already starting to implement the standards.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed the "Return to Play Act of 2013" in May.

It requires that students with head injuries be removed from play immediately, that physicians clear athletes for return to play, and that parents learn about the risk of concussions.

A WSB Radio report indicates that Gwinnett County school officials are starting the rules now, as student athletes get ready for fall sports. (Gwinnett County Public Schools students return on Aug. 7.)

In addition, Gwinnett County student athletes benefit from testing through the Concussion Institute at Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth. It officially opens its doors in August.
