Survey Shows Large Majority of Georgia Republicans Believe in Creationism

Only 43 percent of Democrats believe in creationism over evolution.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. - Genesis 1:1

For the majority of Georgians, those words represent their belief in how the world began. On Aug. 8, Public Policy Polling released the results of a survey which showed 59 percent of Georgians overall believe in creationism over evolution. When assessed along party lines, results indicate 70 percent of Republicans believe in creationism compared to only 43 percent of Democrats.

In Georgia, belief in creationism over evolution is not just a matter of faith -- it can have political ramifications as well. During last year's election, a write-in campaign for "Charles Darwin" was launched against Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA-10) after he said evolution was a "lie straight from the pit of hell." Broun easily won reelection, but continues to be dogged by that and other controversial statements in his bid to secure election to the senate seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss.

Where do you stand on the issue? Are you among the 59 percent of Georgians overall who believe in creationism? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
