“The Stars of Gwinnett” - 28th Annual Awards Luncheon

We love to recognize the contribution of Volunteers in our community--part of their "Active Positive Lifestyle" (A.P.L.). Just imagine the energy of a couple hundred "Apples" in one room!

We love attending the annual Gwinnett Council for Seniors Awards Luncheon, and this year was no exception. Presidents from more than forty senior clubs and organizations take time each year to publicly recognize one senior member for his/her outstanding volunteer contribution, part of their “Active Positive Lifestyle” (A.P.L.).  Just imagine the energy of a couple hundred “Apples” in one room!

This year’s Hollywood theme and fabulous luncheon was provided by Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett.  Amidst encouraging words from a smiling John Wayne (“Thanks for saddling up, Volunteers have true Grit!”); a seductive Marilyn Monroe (“Volunteers are like diamonds – worth their weight in gold!”), it was the perfect backdrop for these “Stars of Gwinnett” to shine as they were honored for their contributions. The food and service were both outstanding, and the company even better!

Guest speaker Gayle Alston, Director at Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving Training Center, offered words of encouragement and helpful stress relief tips for caregivers, such as taking time to breathe deeply in times of stress and always scheduling “Pleasant Events” in your life. These are tips all of us will find helpful in our lives!

The star studded event was held at Bethesda Park Senior Center, always the perfect host. Even though this particular event is just held once a year, Bethesda Park Senior Center offers hundreds of varied activities throughout the year, available to seniors in the Gwinnett area.

This annual event is also the time of year for the “change of guards.” Outgoing President of 2 years Rosalind Bennett passed the presidential spotlight over to Incoming President Keith Nabb, and the 2014-2015 Board and support staff aligned themselves for the challenges of the upcoming year. Thanks to Ros for an amazing two years!
