Baby, It’s Cold Outside – Boomers Seeking Warmth!

Call it a quirk of ours, but we do not like cold wind, cold coffee, cold showers, cold calls, cold toilet seats, and especially not cold weather!

Mid January frigging wind blew us across the parking lot last week, as we rushed to find our car seemingly parked in the next county.  Call it a quirk of ours, but we do not like cold wind, cold coffee, cold showers, cold calls, cold toilet seats, and especially not cold weather!  As we wrote in a previous winter, “Booming Through Winter with a Positive View, humans are tropical creatures, who have to work hard and smart, adapting and surviving to succeed in the wintry months.

Even as Active Seniors, we two Boomers are no exception: Winters are always a challenge. Hibernation can be a tempting lover. So we keep our schedule full in January and February in hopes we can successfully find warm places to “Boom” through Winter, and “rock and roll” right into Spring!

Plan of Attack? You’ve got to know we have one! Play a lot, keep connected, create value…and Play a Lot!

For Play, we start with our annual gym membership renewals – exercise/stay active/play/ is part of our Active Positive Lifestyle…you know, “An A.P.L. a Day” is not just a New Year resolution. Keep those muscles strong, flexible, trim and sexy--who’s your daddy, anyway?  With spring just around the corner, the Swimsuit cannot be ignored!

Then we schedule tennis and Pickleball several times a week… Ah,“What is Pickleball?” you ask. A great doubles sport usually played in a gym, so our pesky winter weather is no issue. We play at the Robert Fowler YMCA in Norcross with folks from 18 to 85—a truly inter-generational game!  And  Pickleball is also now available at Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville. Come try it out—easy to learn, fun to play and the social connections are terrific!

For more connecting, we plan special outings with special friends. We have tickets now to go see “Lombardi” at the Aurora Theater, and very soon after that we have a cruise lined up to the balmy Caribbean…Now that’s what we’re talking about: Sunshine and Warm!  (Ah, remember that swimsuit—it’s needed sooner than anticipated!  Good thing we’ve been frequenting the gym and live with a nutritious diet!)  “One love, one heart…let’s get together and we’ll feel all right”   …Yeah! “We be jammin!”

And speaking of “jammin” (and connecting!), we have a couple of musical performances lined up in January and February, something we do to keep us learning and to create value--we love music! And per the Mayo Clinic “Music has the ability to change moods, soothe nerves and energize your life.”  As we said in our article “Healthy Aging Is Music To Our Ears”,  “Add (1) guitar, (1) keyboard, (2) voices in harmony and some Favorite Songs.  Stir in a few friends, and you have a great recipe for a “social symphony”!  We have a sold out show this Friday January 24th at Bethesda Park Senior Center in Lawrenceville where we will be singing and playing Broadway Show Tunes, and on February 14th we have a Valentine’s Day performance (love songs, of course!at George Pierce Park in Suwanee (pre-registration required by Feb 7th   Enter Code: GPCC14102).  Plenty of work (and fun!) ahead of us to get our voices and instruments warmed up and in tune!  See you there?

For more play, there’s Super Bowl, President’s Day, Groundhog Day, birthdays and lots of events happening at our Gwinnett County Parks —all great reasons to connect with family and friends!

Whew…seems like a lot!  Wonder if maybe we should request an extension to Winter this year--NOT!

This year’s search for winter warmth definitely makes it clear to us that no matter what the season, our favorite “warm and fuzzy places” all include connecting with friends and encouraging folks to make decisions leading to Active Positive Lifestyles!
