2014 and Beyond – What’s Your Vision?

What's unique about your plans for 2014? Are you going to make something special happen in 2014 and beyond?

What’s unique about your plans for 2014? Are you going to make something special happen in 2014 and beyond, or, are you afraid to commit to a plan for fear of failure? Are you one of those folks who say “I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions because I always break them?” Or maybe you are one of those folks who make a plan just to get a snack from the refrigerator! Either way, here are some things we found helpful.

Based on our recent Google search (and our in depth philosophical study with our buddies at the gym,) the most common resolutions include losing weight, stop smoking, learn something new, save money, spend more time with family, travel more, drink less, get organized, work on your to-do list, and volunteer…WHEW! These are all good ideas, but why resolve to do any one of them - just for the sake of it, or to announce that you have one? Not good enough!

You’d better have a good reason for doing your new resolution, because without passion, you’ll quickly fall back into old habits. Time out…back to your room, and this time find a reason! Then report back…report back to whom? To yourself, Silly! You’ve got to convince yourself first! Did you know that over 90% of our conversations are with ourselves – we’re the ones that need convincing, and we listen very well too!

Meanwhile outside your room in our fast paced world, we often use sight but not vision. That is, we definitely “see” to get our car out of the driveway and sometimes to work on time, but we don’t have a plan or vision to get to important places in our lives. Helen Keller could not physically see but she definitely had a vision!

Our physical sight often limits us to only what is in front of our noses. We must have a greater vision. Where we want to go and who we want to be (when we grow up) – the vision we need that drives us out the driveway in the direction toward “the best we can be.” Don’t lose sight of it!

This New Year, instead of making a resolution, use your sight and vision to put your life plan in place. Then everyday use your site to take at least one step in the direction toward your vision…nothing to “break”, right? You do want to arrive at your planned destination, right? Align yourself with your plan and keep moving in that direction! And fellow Boomers/Active Seniors, this means you as well!  We are never too old to dream a new dream or make a new plan—it keeps us young!

Even better, when you set a plan in place to make yourself the best you can be, your consistent everyday behavior automatically aligns with your plan/vision. This in turn encourages others to make themselves the best they can be!

“I see skies of blue, clouds of white, bright blessed day, dark sacred night.  And I say to myself …What a wonderful world.”

What’s your plan/vision to make the rest of your life the best of your life?
