Committee Selects 26 Semifinalists for Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year

Now, six finalists will be chosen.


Gwinnett County school officials announced Monday the names of 26 semifinalists for the district's top honor, Teacher of the Year.

A special committee chose the group of teachers -- 15 from elementary school, six from middle school and five from high school -- from a list of 130 representing individual schools.

Now, the committee will consider the semifinalists’ applications and answers to a set of additional questions in order to determine six finalists

Then on Nov. 7 the county's Teacher of the Year will be announced at special banquet.

This year’s Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year semifinalists are:

Elementary School:

  • Marcus Sowcik of Annistown Elementary--Special Education Teacher - Autism (Grades K-2)
  • Karon M. Stocks of Benefield Elementary--Literacy Coach (Grades K-5)
  • Louvene Williams of Chattahoochee Elementary--5th Grade Teacher
  • Shannon Wiley of Harbins Elementary--1st Grade Teacher
  • Desireé Hempen of Harmony Elementary--2nd Grade Teacher
  • Susie Bullock of Head Elementary--Kindergarten Teacher
  • Jessica Newsome of Jenkins Elementary--Instructional Coach (Grade 1)
  • Stacy Greenstein Lord of Lawrenceville Elementary--Instructional Coach (Grade 2)
  • Margaret LaHatte of McKendree Elementary--1st Grade Teacher
  • Rachael Renje of Monarch School--Special Education Teacher (Pre-K)
  • Heather Watkins of Mulberry Elementary--1st Grade Teacher
  • Amy E. Riker of Puckett’s Mill Elementary--4th Grade Teacher
