Snellville Resident Selected as Interim Gwinnett NAACP President

The Gwinnett NAACP has named Snellville resident Mark Williams as their interim president. As interim, Williams’ role will be to continue the mission of the NAACP, which is handed down from national to the state level, but he has a few ideas of his own that he wants to enact.

“I want to be more active in the community in terms of providing programming,” explained Williams. “For example, I would like to see the educational committee hold workshops about preparing children for academic success.”

Williams was selected because of his vision and familiarity with the organization. He has served as vice president at one time and was also the political action chair. He also campaigned against Georgia State Senator Gloria Butler for District 55 in the July primaries.

He plans on taking a proactive approach to his position, and hopes to establish a health committee to discuss diabetes and other health issues that effect the African-American community right now.

“I hope to find people who are willing to participate fully in the organization,” he continued, “and do things that will bring a sense of community.”

He would like to see the NAACP sponsor family oriented events, like a documentary pertaining to black history or a festival for the kids.
