Gwinnett BOC Approves Funds for Several Transportation Projects

Transportation projects were plentiful on the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners' agenda Tuesday (February 5). And the commissioners approved several, with some price tags ranging into seven figures.

Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said that transportation is a priority for the commissioners in 2013, and that Transportation Director Kim Conroy had been given the signal to move ahead with some projects.

Among the projects approved Tuesday:

• NORCROSS: Bridge improvements project for the Jimmy Carter Boulevard/I-85 diverging diamond interchange in Norcross. The amount is not to exceed about $5.95 million, with E.R. Snell Contractor to do the work. The Gwinnett Village CID is funding about 30 percent of the project.
• LILBURN: Lawrenceville Highway/Bryson-Lions Club Park pedestrian safety project, with the amount not to exceed about $332,400. The improvements would consist of new sidewalks, bus stops, and upgrades to signals, Conroy said. About 63 percent of the funding is with federal stimulus funds.
• BUFORD: Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Burnette Trail project, with the amount not to exceed $33.7 million. This is a Georgia DOT project, with that organization funding 100 percent of the cost.
• DACULA/LAWRENCEVILLE: Sugarloaf Parkway extension (Phase 1, Section II) and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road over the Yellow River. Amount revised down to about $24.6 million. Georgia DOT is funding about 10 percent of the project.
• SNELLVILLE/LAWRENCEVILLE: Hewatt Road and Patterson Road (Pew Creek) projects, amount revised down to about $1.2 million. All the funding comes from 2009 and 2005 SPLOST funds.
