Police Say 'Rip-Off Involving Scam' May Have Led to Lawrenceville-Area Homicide

Rashad Jones, 22, of Lawrenceville was killed Tuesday night near Bridge Walk Drive and Oak Road.

Gwinnett Police Homicide Unit investigators believe they have identified a motive in the death of Rashad Jones, whose body was found Tuesday night in unincorporated Lawrenceville.

Police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said via email Wednesday that police have interviewed witnesses and potential suspects "and learned that the motive behind this may be some type of rip-off involving a scam."

The homicide happened near Bridge Walk Drive and Oak Road, where Jones, 22, of Lawrenceville, was found near tennis courts in the area. Police responded to a "shots fired" call around 8:40 p.m.

Ritter said in the email, "None of the suspects or victim lives in the neighborhood where the shooting took place."
