Fire Causes Heavy Damage at Buford Home

No injuries reported, cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A two-story home in the 200 block of Brookcliff Drive in Buford was heavily damaged by fire Thursday evening.

When Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services arrived at the home at 5:47 p.m., smoke and flames were visible from the second floor, attic and roof.

"Firefighters deployed attack hoselines and entered the burning home to make an aggressive interior attack," wrote GCFES public information officer Capt. Tommy Rutledge in a press release. "They were forced to back out several minutes later due to intense heat and flames. The fire was already running the roof line as crews battled the blaze from outside the structure."

According to Rutledge, the blaze caused heavy damage to the second floor and attic and extensive water and smoke damage to the main level and basement.

The fire was reported by the home occupants, who returned to the residence after a brief outing to discover smoke and flames coming from a second floor window.

"The occupants had reportedly been gone from the home for an estimated 10 minutes when they came back and discovered the fire," Rutledge indicated.

A family consisting of two adults and three children were displaced by the fire. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but appears to have originated from a second floor bedroom, Rutledge added.
