Crime Alert: Car Break-ins at Harbins Park

Patch reader warns about recent car break-ins at a Gwinnett County park.

By Kimberly Kota

On Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, two cars were broken into at the Equestrian Center at Harbins Park.  Whlie out riding my horse with two other ladies, someone broke into a GMC Yukon and a Ford F150.  After leaving out at 11:20 a.m. and returning around 1:30 p.m., we noticed items were stolen out of both of our cars.  I had a cell phone, debit card, clothing and toys for my daughter for Christmas stolen and my friend had her purse stolen.  The thief/thieves sliced under our handles to unlock our doors.  No broken glass and our handles were still on the car and in working condition, but nonetheless compromised.

As you can see from the photos, it wasn't obvious at all that my car was broken into to.  If you look to the far right of the handle and the bottom of the handle, you can see where someone used some kind of tool to slice the seal around the handle to get to the lock.  Had I not seen a toy that must have fallen out of the bag on the ground outside of the car, I may not have even noticed and just thought I had lost or misplaced my items.  In this case, I probably would have figured it out since my friend's purse was taken, but should I had been there alone as I have done before, I may not have realized what had happened.

There have been other reported incidents like these at the Little Mulberry Park Equestrian parking lotas well.  Please do not leave anything of any value in your cars.  I am even skeptical about locking stuff up in my trailer, so I plan to not bring my purse with me, but rather a small pouch of necessary items that I can bring with me on the trail in a saddle bag.

Feel free to conact me if you have any questions.  In the meantime, should this happen to you or someone you know, please make the public aware of it by using this site.
