Buford Business Damaged by Fire

Passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the Hamilton Mill Road business.

No one was injured in a Feb. 18 fire that caused extensive damage to a Hamilton Mill Road business.

Firefighters responded to Pak Mail, located at 2590 Hamilton Mill Road in Buford, after a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the door of the business Monday evening.

According to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services public information officer Capt. Tommy Rutledge, crews found a fire smoldering in the back room of Pak Mail. The sprinkler system had activated.

"The sprinkler system kept the fire at bay and prevented the flames from spreading past the room of origin," Rutledge explained. "This is a prime example of the effectiveness of fire sprinklers to prevent destruction of an entire building from fire."

The room in which the fire originated was heavily damaged. The rest of the business sustained smoke and water damage. Two adjacent business suites had only slight smoke damage, Rutledge added.

The business was closed at the time of the fire. The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
