Football Predictions: Who's Going to Win This Week?

Predictions for Grayson-Shiloh, Parkview-Brookwood, Mill Creek-Norcross, South-Central, and eight other contests.

Well, there may be bigger games in this week, unless you ask fans of Grayson and Shiloh high schools.

Our reader-decided Gwinnett Football Game of the Week, matches teams of completely opposite pedigrees — Grayson is the defending state champion, Shiloh hasn't had a winning season since 2003.

But here they are, both 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Region 8-AAAAAA, with very real aspirations for reaching the playoffs.

Let's be honest, however. A lot will have to happen for the Shiloh Generals to win, which would be about as big of a win as they've ever had. At the same time, Grayson has shown the capability of making game-changing mistakes. Turnovers doomed the Rams, the top-ranked team in Georgia and the nation, in its 22-7 loss to Parkview two weeks ago.

We like upsets around here in PatchLand, despite their impact on our overall prediction record, but it's unlikely here.

PREDICTION: Grayson 30, Shiloh 17

Other game predictions

Last week's record: 11-1 (Overall 34-16)

  • Archer (2-2) at Dacula (0-4): Back-to-back losses to Brookwood and Parkview has Archer needing a region win in 8-AAAAAA. Dacula is an inexplicable 0-4, including last week's 45-7 loss to Grayson. Archer 24, Dacula 17
  • Brookwood (2-1) at Parkview (3-1): This is the biggest "Battle of Five Forks-Trickum" in a long time. First place is on the line in 8-AAAAAA. Brookwood, idle last week, beat Archer 20-19 at home in its last game. Parkview, which won at Archer 20-18 last week with QB Mac Marshall filling in for starter Rob Youngblood, has won three straight and is looking to end a three-year losing streak to Brookwood. These teams always play a tight game. Expect defense and running the ball to rule Friday. There's also the interesting matchup of top running backs Jamaal Cole of Brookwood and Chris Carson of Parkview. Brookwood beat Parkview 23-19 last year, which sounds about right, with one exception: Parkview 23, Brookwood 19
  • Buford (2-1) at Banks County (1-3): Buford, the fourth-ranked team in Class AAA, will have little problem winning its Region 7-AAA opener. Buford 45, Banks 14
  • Meadowcreek (1-3) at Duluth (0-3): Who needs a win worse? Well, it's Meadowcreek, which has lost 41 games in a row dating back to the 2007 season. But Duluth is better than its 1-3 record. Duluth 32, Meadowcreek 20
  • Monroe Area (4-0) at Lanier (3-1): The Lanier Longhorns have had a great start in their first full varsity season and face their biggest challenge ever. Monroe Area is state-ranked (No. 10), but this will be no push-over game. 'Horns can score the upset if everything goes right. It'll be good to be at home. Upset Alert: Lanier 21, Monroe Area 17
  • Mountain View (2-2) at Collins Hill (2-1): Collins Hill, on a two-game winning streak, stays in contention in 7-AAAAAA. Collins Hill 28, Mountain View 14
  • Norcross (4-0) at Mill Creek (3-1): A statement game for both teams. Norcross can provide more evidence that it deserves to be the third-ranked team in Class AAAAAA. Mill Creek, with its only loss being at Brookwood, can step into the lead in 7-AAAAAA. We like this game a lot. Both teams play well on both sides of the line and have D-I talent (such as Norcross RB Alvin Kamara and Mill Creek DL Kelsey Griffin). Home-field advantage will be huge for Mill Creek. But this may be one of the best Norcross teams ever. Norcross 24, Mill Creek 21
  • Peachtree Ridge (1-3) at Habersham Central (0-4): We think Peachtree Ridge has some frustration to release. Sorry, Habersham Central, you may not like it. Peachtree Ridge 32, Habersham Central 14
  • Pinecrest Academy (2-1) at Hebron Christian (1-2): These teams split with common opponent Lakeview Academy. Pinecrest beat Lakeview 30-20; Hebron lost 42-0. Pinecrest 28, Hebron 17
  • South Gwinnett (3-1) at Central Gwinnett (3-0): Another tasty dish in a great weekend for high school football in Gwinnett County. The winner will take a big step in the 8-AAAAAA standings — South is 2-0 in region games; Central is 1-0. We know they'll be some points scored. Central averages 41 per game; South averages 32.5. South won last year's meeting 63-55 in the Georgia Dome. Check out Central's Eman Westmoreland. Did you know that Central is the only undefeated team in Region 8-AAAAAA? Central Gwinnett 40, South Gwinnett 38
  • Wesleyan (3-1) at Jefferson County (1-4): Wesleyan extends winning streak to four games. Wesleyan 24, Jefferson County 14
