Gwinnett Woman's Petition to Boycott Florida Gaining Ground

A Gwinnett County woman's petition to boycott Florida following Trayvon Martin's shooting death has gained national -- and international -- attention.

Christine Bergman started the petition about a year ago after hearing about the teenager's death. Until a week or so ago, CBS Atlanta News reports she had about 100 signatures.

Now, there are more than 12,000 names, including people from around the world.

Specifically, the petition calls for boycotting the Sunshine State until its "Stand Your Ground Law" is repealed.

The law, which Georgia also has some form of, has come under intense scrutiny since George Zimmerman killed, and was then acquitted of murdering the unarmed Martin.

"Your state is not a safe place to vacation if your citizens are able to kill anyone they deem suspicious," she said in her petition statement.

This week, in particular, such calls for action are sparking even more conversation as the National Association of Black Journalists readies for its annual convention in Orlando next week.

NABJ President Gregory H. Lee Jr. said Sunday during an awards luncheon in Atlanta that the organization would still be in Florida come July 31. A plenary on the Zimmerman-Martin case has been added, he said, and speakers will include Atlanta's Mayor Kasim Reed.

Speak Out: What do you think about Christine Bergman's petition calling for a boycott of Florida tourism? Do you think conventions should cease there until "Stand Your Ground Law" is axed?
