Elberton, Ga. My Southern History Tour “Exploring”

By: Kenneth Stepp

Being me some days, is better than others. Today is one of those days. Today I am exploring Elberton Georgia. Founded in 1803, it is one of Georgia’s oldest cities. Although historically an early American town. Much of it was built pre-WWII. What makes it unique, Buildings built in the early 1940’s were usually kind of plain. Not these. They had money and talented builders. In part, because of the thriving granite business.

To prepare for my daytrip here. I emailed the director of the historic theater here. Her name is Toni. Southern hospitality at it’s finest. On an inappropriate sidenote. Her love and knowledge of history and art, were only outshined by a captivating smile. Another interesting person I have been blessed to meet.

For conspiracy theorists, Elberton has the holy grail of monuments. The Georgia Guidestones. To them, The Illuminati had them built as a guide to live their way after they murder 7.5 billion of us worthless eaters. To locals, this is absurd. Most just believe they are a monument someone had built because they bought into a philosophy of a sustainable Earth. There are other theories. I’m happy to say. I just don’t know, and move on.

Of course, this town has much more to offer. These are the friendliest folks I have met in years. The town itself is old. I mean historically old. If you value history, architecture, and smiles. This is a great place to visit. Even settle. I’ve always thought that if I was CEO of a large company and wanted to relocate. I would bring the company to a place like this.

Adding to the small economy, a safe place for my employees to live, and raise their families. A place where we could make a real difference. A town like this would be perfect. Right now, I am finishing this article up, while sitting in a local eatery called, Richard’s. I recommend it highly. It have great food, cold beer, and wifi. Couple that with friendly people. It’s a find.

My Southern History Tour is my hobby. Much like writing. I throw all of me into it. Working from my laptop and cellphone has it’s perks. Being able to invent a hobby like this is a big one. I call this exploring. I do this because I needed a hobby I could do alone. I have a passion for art, history, knowledge, and people. Exploring rings every bell. Today was a five star day. Elberton is a MUST to other fellow explorers. It’s a quaint and warm place. I think that qualifies it as a town I will visit more than once. in mid July the theater will have “Who’s On First” playing live. I intend on being there. Toni said to call first and she would arrange for two free tickets at the window. My response….. I only need one. And, thank you so much.

It’s so funny what people see and hear. I always feel I see and hear things others do not. Of course, it could be me, trying to make myself special. Or, it could be true. I tend to hear the voices of all here. I see expressions, and emotions. Even through the clanging of the dishes being washed. I like the voices. For the most part. They are happy. Many you can tell have family or lovers meet them for lunch. There is something about that I find sweet. Even touching. This really is what we call, America. An amazing country, an amazing town, full of amazing people. Today is a good day to be me.
