The Facebook End is Nigh!

The sky is falling! Facebook is taking away our free ride! What are we going to do!

Apparently there is a bit of panic going on right now with the latest change to Facebook’s algorithm with the lack of organic reach. I have been reading what all the experts are saying, what Facebook has put out, what people are seeing and what the new strategies that are going into place. Needless to say I don’t have time to write about everything that I have learned and played with myself. I will save that for a class…

What is going on?
With our newsfeeds Facebook likes to adjust from time to time what actually shows up in that feed. They just implemented a massive change to the layout, the feed algorithm and their ad platform. A change that some people love and lots of people hate. The problem with this new change for most businesses is that it just cut down the organic reach to a mere 1 to 3%. Yikes! Needless to say, we need a new plan or to at least adjust the plan we have been using.

Why is this happening to me?
It’s not just you, its also me… I talked about this as soon as I heard that Facebook was going to go public (a couple of years back). What I said is that the entire business model would change and the biggest affected would be business page owners. They would have to start putting profit first and making decisions based on that thought. Little did I know how right I was and how much of a difference it would make. So when you see a new change coming out on Facebook it all boils down to something that will make them more money. Even upgrading icons to make them “pop” a little more has to do with money. So what you have to do is learn to roll with the punches and know that you will always have to pay attention to when changes happen.

What can I do about it?
That is the million dollar question! First you need to accept that you are going to need to start spending a little money on ads. Can you do it without? Yup, but it will take more time and more effort on your part. Spend $5 here and there to promote a post, it is worth it.

When you are going to start playing with promoted posts, make sure you are promoting something that will get your fans engaged. Something where they will say, “Oh I like that” or something that will elicit a comment from them. What will happen is that Facebook will take a note of that, then your next post should hit all of those people organically that have engaged in that one post. I like to call that stacking… Something I talk about in one of my classes. You want Facebook’s algorithm to see that people are interested in what you have to say, this will help your long term organic reach. Will it ever get back to what it was? Maybe so maybe not… But if you aren’t taking necessary steps then you will never know.

Long story short, Facebook doesn’t hate you. They actually love you and want to help your business, because it helps their business. The thing we all have to remember is that this is their play ground so we have to play by their rules.
