Update: Gwinnett Feels Some Impact from Severe Storms

Damage was reported in the Norcross area near the DeKalb County line.

Gwinnett County was spared the worst of Thursday evening's severe storms, but did not get away unscathed.

The worst damage was seen the Norcross area near the DeKalb County line, according to Gwinnett Police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith.

"Damage included downed trees and power lines, power outages, and damaged street sign and traffic signals," Smith said in an email. "No serious injuries have been reported."

Gwinnett Fire spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden issued the following media release around 10:30 p.m.:

GWINNETT COUNTY FIRE MEDIA E-RELEASE:  SEVERAL STORM RELEATED CALLS

  • Grass woods fire at 900 block of Tom Smith Road in Snellville…Tree on fire in woods, crews extinguished with a fire attack line
  • Tree on building at 6200 block Park Road  in Doraville…large tree is down across the roadway which snapped poles in half
  • Uncontrolled sprinkler head activation 1900 block of North Norcross Tucker
  • Wires Down 4400 block  Georgia Avenue in Doraville
  • Wires Down 6800 block Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Norcross power is out
  • Wires Down Camp Circle at Stone Mountain Highway in Lilburn

The Liberty Heights area has been hit hard. Fire Department established a command post with Police Department. Minor injuries reported.  GSAR and TRT are on the scene to assist.  Currently the Fire Department and the Police Department are sweeping the entire Liberty Heights area where power is out. Several trees and power poles and electrical supply lines are down . Crews are going door to door checking for any other hazards and for the safety of the residents. Information will be updated when available.

A residential fire was called out at approximately 8:10 PM that was not  related to the storm at 2600 block of Treehouse Lane in Lawrenceville…Heavy fire extinguished from outside, 5 family members displaced 2 adults and 3 children.
