A Golden Idea for St. Patrick's Day

Irish folklore is all about mischievous leprechauns and discovering that ever elusive pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. How much wealthier would we be if we were lucky enough to find one.

Sunday, March 17, is St. Patrick's Day - a holiday that today is often filled with celebrations, parades and green beer.

Ireland is, of course, where it all started. The Emerald Isle is full of history and folklore surrounding St. Paddy's day which began as a religious holiday over 1,000 years ago.

Finding a four-leaf clover, spotting a leprechaun or discovering that forever-elusive pot of gold at the end of a rainbow is part of the lore.

But just how much is a pot of gold actually worth? The folks at GoBanking.com decided to put pencil to paper and figure it out.

Using a clay pot 10 inches wide by 9.75 inches deep, and assuming all the available space was used, the container could be filled with 271.36 ounces of gold - that calulates out to $427,000 at today's current price.

That would be enough to buy nearly three houses at the current average price - or one nice home in Gwinnett.

But that's assuming the IRS does't want a cut.

Enjoy St. Patrick's Day.
