PEG
AND JOE O’TOOLE NAMED 2013 VOLUNTEERS OF YEAR

ATLANTA
(October 25, 2013) – Peg and Joe O’Toole of Norcross
are receiving the YMCA of Metro Atlanta’s 2013 Volunteers of the Year award for their
service at the Robert D. Fowler Family YMCA in Peachtree Corners. Their work
will be honored at the annual volunteer recognition dinner Monday,
November 4, 2013.

The
O’Tooles got the sport of pickleball started at the Fowler Y. Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton
court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a
perforated plastic baseball, similar to a whiffle ball, and wood or composite
paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick,
fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

There
are 100 people, ranging in age from 18 to 82, now involved at the Fowler Y.
Pickleball provides an environment where players interact, compete and have fun
together, regardless of age or gender.

“The
Y recognizes that older adults want and need programs to stay healthy, fit and
active,” says Joe O’Toole. “We enjoy tennis and activities that offer cardio and
strength training. We need to maintain our health, and a side benefit is we’ve
made many new friends at the Y.”

Peg
O’Toole likes spreading the word about pickleball. “A member who home schools
her girls discovered pickleball is a great PE experience for her and her
daughters,” she says. “And, a young player was so enthusiastic, he brought his
mom along and now she is a regular player.”

“Joe
and Peg have tremendous passion for the Y and their pickleball contribution is
a great success,” says Mark Thornell, executive director of the Fowler Y. “They
volunteered their time with a group of middle school students by teaching them
the sport. We are proud to be listed in the USA Pickleball Association because
of their efforts!”

The Y is a powerful
association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment
to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a
sense of social responsibility. Every day, we work side-by-side with our
neighbors to make sure everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has
the opportunity to learn, grow and connect. Call 770-246-9622 or visit
