'The Nutcracker' Holiday Magic Returns to Gwinnett Performing Arts Center

Gwinnett Ballet Theatre opening three-week run of traditional ballet at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center in Duluth.

Gwinnett Ballet Theatre will launch its 31st annual production of “The Nutcracker” this weekend at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center in Duluth. GBT’s production, the second largest in the Atlanta metro area, offers 11 public performances and five outreach shows.

The first public performance will be Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2:30 p.m. Shows will continue through Sunday, Dec. 16. The performances will be accompanied by the professional 35 musicians of the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre Orchestra for the last eight shows from Dec. 7 onward.

This holiday season will be particularly special for the GBT Orchestra and its distinguished conductor Predrag Gosta. An artist of international renown, Gosta recently returned from Greta Britain where he conducted the esteemed London Symphony Orchestra in works by Rachmaninoff, Moussoursky, and the contemporary Greek composer Andreas Makris. Gosta, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, is a graduate of the Trinity College of Music in London.

The 2:30 p.m. show Saturday, Dec. 8, will mark the 50th performance of GBT’s “The Nutcracker” accompanied by its orchestra.

“Started in 2006 and still going strong, the 50th show of the Nutcracker proves the commitment as well as the courage of the musicians and GBT company dancers and staff,” said Gosta. “We have a commitment to our community to provide the highest quality arts performances using the talents of the finest professional musicians. The uncertainty of the economic climate has not kept GBT from offering the highest caliber arts experience for its public.”

This production is also the first Nutcracker season with new Artistic Director Wade Walthall at the helm. The cast of dancers and characters will give audiences a traditionally told Nutcracker with all the magic and beauty with which GBT audiences are familiar.

Tickets range between $13.50 and $29.50 with discounts for students, senior citizens and groups of 10 or more. They are available through Ticketmaster locations by calling 404-249-6400, or by visiting the Gwinnett Center Box Office.

The production opend Friday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. with a special Boy and Girl Scout show. Scout leaders are encouraged to contact GBT at 770-237-0046 to receive the special promo code for these $6 tickets.
