Peachtree Corners Buys Property Across From The Forum

Gwinnett County's newest - and largest city - now owns 20.6 acres of undeveloped land on Peachtree Parkway.

Peachtree Corners city officials took an important step toward fulfilling their promise to protect the quality of life and safeguard property values in the city Monday by closing on the purchase of a 20.6 acre tract of land across from The Forum on Peachtree Parkway. Pleasant Hill Road Will Close June 7-10 for Work on Diverging Diamond

Bridge at I-85 and Pleasant Hill Road to be closed for the weekend starting June 7 for DDI transition.

It won’t be long before the Diverging Diamond Interchange on the bridge at Interstate 85 and Pleasant Hill Road in unincorporated Duluth opens. Before that happens the Gwinnett Department of Transportation will close the bridge for the weekend starting at 9 p.m. Friday, June 7, weather and conditions permitting. The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic with the DDI configuration at 5 a.m. Monday, June 10. The DDI project involves shifting traffic to the opposite side of the bridge to make left turns onto the interstate easier and improve the flow of traffic across the bridge. Dacula Council to Meet This Week to Discuss 2030 Comprehensive Plan Updates

The City of Dacula has received bids related to the plan update and is likely to award the best, most responsive bid during the special called meeting.

The Mayor and Dacula City Council will hold a special called work session and special called city council meeting on May 15, 2013. The work session will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the special called city council meeting at 6:30 p.m. The purpose of the meetings is to discuss matters concerning the 2030 Comprehensive Plan update The City of Dacula received bids through 3 p.m. on May 8, 2013 for professional services in the update of the City 2030 Comprehensive Plan. The bid opening was at 3:05 p.m. at City Hall. Seven companies provided bids that ranged from $120,400 to $19,000. The bids varied widely, but out of the seven, the City received three competitive bids well within the range of costs expected by the City Staff. The bids are being…

Construction Contract Awarded for Boggs Road Improvements

The project will add about three-quarters of a mile of sidewalk and bus stop pads along the east and west side of Boggs Road in Duluth and Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett County Commissioners awarded a construction contract for pedestrian improvements along Boggs Road between Old Norcross Road and Breckinridge Boulevard to low bidder I.S.C. Inc. The $383,611 project in Duluth and Lawrenceville will add about three-quarters of a mile of sidewalk and bus stop pads along the east and west side of Boggs Road, curb and gutter, drainage improvements and road striping, according to a news release. Funding comes from a Federal Transit Administration grant. This project is expected to be complete by the end of August. FAA Spares Briscoe Field Control Tower

Announcement affects Gwinnett airport tower funding.

The control tower at Gwinnett County-owned Briscoe Field will remain open at least through September, according to a Federal Aviation Administration announcement Friday (May 10). FAA Director Ray LaHood said in a statement:  ... the recently enacted Reducing Flight Delays Act of 2013 will allow the FAA to transfer sufficient funds to end employee furloughs and keep the 149 low activity contract towers originally slated for closure in June open for the remainder of fiscal year 2013. The federal government's fiscal year ends Sept. 30. Briscoe Field's control tower, which is maintained by the FAA, had been among 149 towers nationally that were slated to be closed under federal budget cuts known as sequestration. National Kids to Parks Day Comes to Gwinnett

The event promotes healthy family lifestyles, and it takes place May 18.

National Kids to Parks Day is coming to Gwinnett County. The free event takes place locally May 18 at Shorty Howell Park in Duluth, where families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch for outdoor play, wildlife education and crafts. Additionally, Bogan Park in Buford will host a bike rodeo. Children will be able to decorate their bicycles, compete in a relay and get bicycle and helmet safety checks for $6 each.  It is National Park Trust's third annual National Kids to Parks Day, and officials say they event helps combat obesity and other ailments by encouraging a healthy lifestyle. SR 20 Widening To Proceed in Gwinnett

The project near PIB in Sugar Hill is expected to take about three years.

Gwinnett Commissioners on Tuesday (May 7) approved the latest phase of the widening of State Route 20 in the Sugar Hill area. According to a news release, the last remaining two-lane section of SR 20 in Gwinnett will be widened, from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Burnette Trail in Sugar Hill. Gwinnett purchased right of way and easements from about 200 properties using state and federal funds, and will also oversee the state-funded construction, according to the release. Pay Raises Approved for Norcross Mayor, City Council

The council passed a measure Monday that will increase their salaries and the mayor's by 50 percent. The new pay would be entitled to those who are elected on or after January 2014.

After a lengthy discussion during the May city council meeting Monday (May 6), the Norcross City Council approved a measure to raise their pay and the mayor's by 50 percent. The vote was 4-1, with Mayor Pro Tem Andrew Hixson voting against it. The pay raise comes after nearly 18 years of no increased salary. According to City Clerk Susan Wuerzner, the elected officials have not received a raise since Sept. 5, 1995. After comparing many of the surrounding cities' salaries for their councils and mayors for the past few months, the city created the following proposal: Mayor: Current salary is $6,900; approved to $10,350 Mayor Pro Tem: Current salary is $6,000; approved to $9,000 Councilmembers: Current salary is $5,400; approved to $8,100 …
