Councilman David McLeroy and former councilman Keith Shewbert had the most votes in the local city election.
After two months of campaigning, a candidates debate forum and numerous meet-and-greets with locals, the four candidates in the 2012 Norcross City Council election can finally take a breather: The results were announced around 9:20 p.m. election night, and the winners are incumbent David McLeroy and former Councilman Keith Shewbert. "I am very happy and glad that we had such a huge turnout," said Shewbert, who had served one term from 2006 to 2008. "We're looking forward to listening to the citizens and leaning toward the way they want to go in the city." "I'm relieved," said McLeroy, who's served on the council for five terms. "I'm glad the citizens have the confidence in me after 10 years, and that comforts me that they trust me for …

Voters within the city limits of Dacula pass package store referendum by large margin.
UPDATED Nov. 6, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. By an overwhelming margin, Dacula voters have indicated their support for allowing package stores within the city limits. Earlier this year, Russ Weaver began a petition drive in hopes of securing enough signatures from Dacula voters to have a package store referendum placed on the November ballot. His efforts were successful. As a result, city residents headed to the polls today to answer the following question: “Shall the issuance of licenses for the package sale of distilled spirits be approved?” The voters said yes by a 181 to 76 margin. The totals, according to Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks, will remain unofficial until the results of the election are certified. “The electorate has spoken,” Wilbanks said. “I …

The constitutional amendment grants the state authority to approve charter schools, whether local school boards want them or not.
Georgia voters gave the state more authority over charter schools on Tuesday, passing a constitutional amendment empowering a commission to overrule local school districts that reject charter school petitions. With all counties fully reporting, the hotly contested amendment had support of 58.5 percent of voters. See selected county results below. It was an emotionally charged issue that in some ways united Georgians across political and demographic lines. A Peach Pundit poll from late October had found "no significant difference [in support] based on whether a voter is a Republican or a Democrat, a male or a female, or based on race." Camille Cottrell, an Emory University instructor and card-carrying Democrat, is an example of the …
President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election, according to projections.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, according to network projections. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the…
Voters in Georgia on Tuesday cast their ballot for Mitt Romney, giving him the state's 16 Electoral votes, according to early results.
In a move that fell in line with expectations, Mitt Romney was projected to win Georgia’s 16 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Barack Obama. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Republican candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Georgia and spent more time visiting the Peach State to raise money. The state has been a Republican stronghold in recent presidential elections. The economy was a key issue for many voters in Georgia state, which has had a higher than average unemployment rate. Turnout was strong in Georgia and early voting was almost as popular this year as four years ago. …

Georgia voters have until 7 p.m. to cast their Election 2012 ballots, but voting in key swing states ends as much as two hours after that, and exit polling could provide an early indication of whether President Obama or Mitt Romney wins the White House. The earliest key state to watch for is Virginia, where the polls close at 6 p.m. Voting ends 30 minutes later in swing states Ohio and North Carolina. At 7 p.m. swing states Florida, Pennslvania and New Hampshire close their polls. Nevada, the final swing state that could prove as pivotal as Iowa, closes its voting at 9 p.m. As long as you make it to the polls by 7 p.m., you'll be able to vote in Georgia. They won't close the lines until the last voter has cast his or her ballot. Check …
During last Wednesday's appearance at a lunch sponsored by the Greater Eastside Chamber of Commerce, Woodall discussed the approaching fiscal cliff.
This story originated on Snellville Patch. District 7 Congressman Rob Woodall (R) spoke to local business men and women during last Wednesday's Greater Eastside Chamber of Commerce 'Lunch and Learn' at Tom Kashi Insurance. Focusing on the national debt and the future economy of our children, he offered a vivid presentation of our nation's fiscal cliff – something that neither Democrat nor Republican has a solid plan on avoiding. “We're working pretty hard here in the weeks before the election,” said Woodall. “This is the window when all the American people are paying attention!” According to Woodall, spending money we don't have is not new. As a nation, we are currently $16 trillion in debt. To bring that point home, he offered some …
Charter school amendment appears headed for win.
UPATE 5:50 pm If you are in line to vote at 7 pm, you will get to vote even though the polls close then. Tens of thousands of Fulton County voters have already cast ballots today. Turnout is especially high for today’s General Election, as it is in most Presidential election years. It's too early to know how this year compares to 2008. In the evening after traditional work hours, peak turnout is anticipated, and tens of thousands of additional voters could exercise their right to vote. Fulton County elections officials released a statement advising that voters who are in line at 7 pm will be allowed to vote under Georgia law. As provided by Georgia law, voters who are over age 75 or who have a disability are eligible to ask to move ahead …

Results Updated 2 a.m., Wednesday Gwinnett County voters provided few surprises on Election Day. They came out in large numbers, voted mostly Republican and provided several lopsided outcomes. Nearly 75 percent of the county's registered voters casted their ballots, more than five percentage points better than the 2008 turnout. Gwinnettians voted for Gov. Mitt Romney for president, for incumbents in 11 races, including three Board of Education candidates, and in favor of the controversial Public Charter School Amendment (by a 63% to 37% margin), which drew similar margins elsewhere in the state. U.S. Representatives Rob Woodall (R, District 7) and Hank Johnson (D, District 4) had sizable leads among their Gwinnett constituents as they …
