What Is Fine Art and What Is the Fine Art Market?

Does anyone have a feel for what is considered fine art, and if you do, what is that art worth?

Most think of art in terms of visual arts, i.e. painting, sculpture, jewelry, and the like. Many think of artists in terms of Michelangelo, Rubens, or companies like Tiffany or Faberge, and others. But most modern art isn’t created by folks with innate ability. Artists learn it and develop the sales skills needed to make a living. More likely they are the Warhols of our age. Most of us don’t appreciate some of the fine arts because we don’t like how it looks. After all a pile of sticks is just a pile of sticks no matter how cleverly they are stacked up. Yet the art market in the United States is over a billion dollars per year. Millionaires stalk each other at art auction in places like Christie’s and pay enormous prices for some items …

Stroll Amidst the Arts at 'Barefoot in the Park'

Ninth annual Barefoot in the Park Fine Arts Festival to fill the Duluth Town Green with jewelry, paintings, photography, wood art, sculpture, fiber art, and more.

Barefoot in the Park Fine Arts Festival will celebrate its ninth year of bringing an exhilarating and diverse offering of visual and performing arts to the Duluth Town Green May 11 and 12. The festival will showcase the work of 50-plus juried visual artists in a garden of white tents. Two stages of live performing arts groups will entertain festival-goers. A Children’s Tent full of activities, Binder’s Adult Learning Village featuring live art demonstrations, wine tastings, a beer garden, and plenty of good food will complete the experience. There is no admission fee. The traditional “Barefoot Gala” will happen on Saturday from 5 until 8 p.m. Accompanied by the young musicians of “38th Parallel,” partygoers will sip wine, sample food from …

Rock Springs ES Chorus Sings National Anthem at Coolray Field

Students from the Lawrenceville elementary school performed the Star Spangled Banner before the Gwinnett Braves game Thursday.

The Rock Springs Elementary School Chorus sang the National Anthem ahead of the Gwinnett Braves game Thursday, May 2nd. The elementary school is located on Rock Springs Road in Lawrenceville, not too far from Coolray Field. The G-Braves took on the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders, but lost 4-1. Thursday night's game also marked the start of a rehab stint for Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Norcross Car Show Back for 16th Year

The annual benefit brings thousands of people to Norcross every year.

It's back for the 16th year: the Norcross Car Show. The annual benefit is one of the city's most attended events, drawing in thousands of people to see vintage Fords, new high-end cars, motorcycles and more, parked along the streets of historic downtown. According to Dodger and Liz DeLeon, the Norcross couple in charge of the car show, the event will return May 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees still can expect food and drinks, a raffle, prizes, a silent auction, and of course, a variety of displayed cars. At least 65 vehicles have been registered so far, and while they've always given away awards to the top cars, they're also awarding plaques to the top 25 cars of the 2013 show. 'Fish and Sips' Helping to Restock Berkeley Lake

Eye Candy Art Studio in downtown Duluth offering fish painting and wine sipping class Wednesday, May 1, to raise funds to put fish back in Berkeley Lake.

Eye Candy Art Studio in Duluth is offering a “Fish and Sips” painting and wine sipping class to raise funds to restock the fish in the lake at nearby Berkeley Lake. The lake was drained and the fish removed to repair the dam.   Ashley Towers, owner of the art and pottery shop, will lead the class starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1. Participants may bring their own bottles of wine. “Carol Seitz of the Berkeley Lake community approached Eye Candy Art Studio about collaborating to help raise funds for re-stocking the lake,” Towers said. “She cleverly named the event ‘Fish and Sips’ to play off the term ‘Fish & Chips.’” A fish-themed canvas painting class was decided upon. 'To Kill a Mockingbird' Author Comes to Life on the Lionheart Stage

Duluth Roundabout Sculpture Design to be Unveiled

Duluth citizens invited to meet artist/blacksmith Michael Dillon and see his design for the Roundabout sculpture.

Michael Dillon, the artist/blacksmith selected by Duluth’s Gateway Art Project Committee to create and install a sculpture in the Roundabout, will be introduced and his design unveiled Tuesday, April 30. The Duluth Fine Arts League is hosting the event from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, in the Community Room at Duluth City Hall. Dillon is the owner of Dillon Forge in Crabapple, GA. “I felt an immediate connection to Duluth’s history, as well as their modern day community vision and values,” Dillon said in a news release issued by the City of Duluth. “I was also very excited by AGCO’s involvement in the project, as their machinery is a part of my history, and inspires my personal aesthetic.” The public art project has been funded with …
