Updated: Suspect Arrested in Theft of Porsche from Homicide Scene

Duluth Police Department had issued a warrant for Robert Craig Sandman in connection with theft of the vehicle at the scene of a Duluth homicide.

Duluth Police have learned that Robert Craig Sandman, 52, has been arrested in New Mexico on a criminal warrant for car theft the Duluth Police Department had issued. The car, a 1988 red Porsche 944, was reported stolen from the scene of the March homicide of Donald Singer at his Duluth home.

Sandman was arrested on the Duluth PD's charge, Duluth Police Capt. Mark Hunter reported in an email April 19. “We have just learned about his arrest and have been in communication with authorities in New Mexico. They are assisting us with follow-up at this time.”

According to information provided by Hunter, Sandman was apparently arrested April 7 and was in custody of the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office. Sandman was being held in the Sandoval County Detention Center in Bernalillo, NM.

In the incident report obtained by Duluth Patch, a Sandoval County Sheriff's deputy related that he had been dispatched to the San Felipe Casino at 1 a.m. April 7 in reference to an intoxicated male in the parking lot later identified as Sandman. The casino is located in San Felipe, NM.

Sandman's address was reported as Cedar Rapids, IA, and his occupation as truck driver.

After checking and finding out that a felony warrant had been issued for Sandman out of Georgia, the deputy arrested Sandman and transported him to the Sandoval County Detention Center. Sandman was then transferred to the University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center where he was treated for metamphetamine ingestion, according to the report.

After being released from the hospital April 8, Sandman was transported back to the jail.

Duluth Police Sgt. Don Woodruff reported that Sandman was being extradited to Duluth. Woodruff emphasized that Sandman was wanted in connection with the car theft charge.

Following an investigation, the Duluth Police Department announced April 4 it had issued a warrant for Sandman for theft by taking in connection with theft of the Porsche. The car was believed to have been stolen between March 24 and March 29.

Duluth Police found Singer’s body wrapped in a blanket in the garage of his home on Montheath Pass March 28. Singer’s daughter called 911 after discovering his body.

It was determined that Singer’s Porsche was missing along with some personal effects. A BOLO was issued for the Porsche by Duluth Police.

Singer was apparently killed between 7 a.m. March 24 and 3 p.m. March 26.
